Family and Friends CPR

The CPR for Family and Friends awareness program is modular and teaches rescuers skills in CPR and relief of choking (foreign-body airway obstruction).

It presents information about the American Heart Association adult Chain of Survival and signs of heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke and choking in adults. The course also presents information on the American Heart Association pediatric infant and child Chain of Survival, signs of choking in infants and children, how to reduce risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and prevention of the most common fatal injuries in infants and children.

Course Length

  • All ages: 2-1/2 - 4 hours (depending on number of students)
  • Adult: 2 hours
  • Infant and child: 1-2½ hours

Intended Audience

All lay rescuers, such as schoolchildren, family members of patients at risk for sudden cardiac death, and other general members of the community who want to learn CPR but do not need a course completion card.

The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in BLS, ACLS, and PALS and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the American Heart Association. Any fees charged for such a course, except for a portion of fees needed for AHA course materials, do not represent income to the Association.
